Mullvad Review

July 17, 2014

Mullvad is a VPN service operated by a small company in Sweden. Since they’re under Swedish jurisdiction, they don’t have to comply with US DMCA notices or court orders. Also, since Mullvad is a VPN service; EU data retention laws do not apply. To that effect, Mullvad claims to not keep any logs of any activity on their network.

Signing Up:

Signing up for Mullvad’s service is very simple. You just make an account by clicking the “Create account” button, and a random number will be generated. This is your account, you do not provide any personal information. The methods of payment accepted are cash, Bitcoin, PayPal, and bank wire. I used Bitcoin to sign up for my service. To pay for my service I just had to send the Bitcoin to an address I was given. After 1 confirmation, my account was loaded with the appropriate time, and was ready for use.

Locations:

Mullvad offers servers in 4 locations. These locations are USA, Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. There are several servers available at each location. I do wish they offered a UK location, but this is only a minor annoyance.

Speed:

Now as for the speed of these servers, they are moderately fast. I have a 60Mbps down, 5Mbps up connection from my ISP. Here are a few speed tests I ran from the closest servers:

Mullvad Germany Location:

Mullvad Netherlands Location:

My speeds while torrenting are also pretty impressive. I regularly get 2MB/s+ down, and several KB/s up. Faster speeds may also be achieved by using port forwarding, and then using the provided port as the listening port in your BitTorrent client. You can setup port forwarding through the Mullvad client, or by visiting their website, logging in, and clicking the “Add” button on your account page. Port forwarding worked perfectly when I tried it.

Client:

Mullvad also offers a nice little client. The client runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It’s lightweight, and gets the job done nicely. It offers DNS leak protection, and a killswitch should your connection to the service drop.

Final Thoughts:

Mullvad is a great VPN service overall. They take your privacy very seriously, they’re fast, and they have a great client. The only real con I can think of is the lack of a UK location.

Overall, if you’re looking for a solid, non logging VPN service and don’t need a UK location; you can’t go wrong with Mullvad.
